Long-term wildlife disease surveillance of a complex ungulate community

This dataset compiles long-term epidemiological, ecological, and serological data used in a series of peer-reviewed studies focused on infectious diseases in wild ungulate populations from a National Park in Spain. The data underpin multiple investigations addressing the dynamics, determinants, and co-occurrence of pathogens of veterinary and zoonotic relevance at the wildlife–livestock–human interface. The dataset includes information collected over more than a decade (2005–2018) from key wild ungulate species (wild boar Sus scrofa, red deer Cervus elaphus, and fallow deer Dama dama), covering pathogens such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex, Toxoplasma gondii, Hepatitis E virus (HEV), bluetongue virus, and other selected infectious agents. Variables encompass individual-level serological or infection status, host demographic traits, population abundance indices, temporal information, and environmental or management-related factors. These data were used to: Identify long-term determinants of pathogen prevalence and exposure in wildlife populations. Assess temporal trends and interannual variability in disease dynamics. Explore multi-pathogen exposure patterns within host communities. Improve understanding of wildlife disease maintenance and transmission in multi-host systems.
