Total mRNA from the eukaryotic community (>5 micrometers) of the surface mixed layer at Station ALOHA was sequenced from three samples during the summer of 2012. To understand the underlying functional group specific metabolism associated with blooms, three incubation experiments simulating nutrient-loading events and modeled after McAndrew et al. (2007) were performed in conjunction with each of the 60 L in situ samples. In all experiments, surface water (25 m) was amended a specified suite of nutrients modeled off of a deep water up welling event from below the nutricline (700 m) and incubated for seven days in deckboard incubators.
