When the epitope was used as a tolerizing agent, 6 of 20 mice got arthritis when they were subsequently give collagen-induced arthritis, compared to 16 of 18 that did not receive epitope. Peptides with point mutations of the epitope at positions 16, 17, 19, 20, and 22 were not able to induce tolerance, indicating that these were the critical residues.
