Device for splitting long logs with splitting tongs (2) formed from two arcuate splitting arms (1a， 1b)， the two splitting arms (1a， 1b) being pivotably mounted on a support (4) in pivot bearings (5a， 5b) spaced apart from one another and at their free and mutually facing ends each carry splitting knives (3a， 3b)， which by means of a hydraulic cylinder (6) are in an open position in which the cutting edges of the splitting knives (3a， 3b) are spaced apart from one another， in a closed position， in which the cutting edges of the splitting knives (3a， 3b) lie against one another and with the support (4) and the two splitting arms (1a， 1b) delimit a receiving space for splitting wood with an essentially elliptical cross section. It is proposed that， in the closed position， the surfaces of the splitting knives (3a， 3b) facing the receiving space lie parallel to one another and in the same plane， with the normal distance between the cutting edges lying in this plane and touching one another with the carrier (4) being a transverse axis of the receiving space forms and the largest extension of the receiving space between the two gap arms (1a， 1b) perpendicular to the transverse axis forms a main axis of the receiving space， and the ratio (v) of the lengths of the major axis to the transverse axis is 1.7-2.0.
