Hystrix brachyura Genome sequencing and assembly

Vertebrates have different and rigid body coverings (spines, scales, feathers, and hair). Spines are a defense mechanism protecting against potential predators because they can puncture the skin and inflict pain.Spiny skin covering is found in hedgehogs (order Eulipotyphla) and tenrecs (order Afrosoricida) and phylogenetically unrelated porcupines (order Rodentia). Here, we sequenced the de novo genome of a porcupine to provide bases for genomic analyses.
