YOUTHBUS: Youth Groups for Sustainable Development: Lessons from the Ethiopian Model 2016

The study examines youth groups in northern Ethiopia. These are newly established groups consisting of landless and near-landless rural youth, set up by regional authorities to create employment by allocating rehabilitated communal lands and mineral resources for the groups to manage. The youth groups are organized as primary cooperatives with their own board and bylaws, and must develop a business plan approved by local authorities, as well as submit accounts for auditing. The data material consists of two datasets: one with questions at the group level, covering topics such as resource management and governance, and one with questions at the member level, containing questions about demographics, education, mobile phone ownership, and position in the group's board and leadership. Data collection was carried out in the Tigray region in 2016.
