These are letters received from surveyors, mostly relating to matters such as the survey description of farms, reserves, churches, schools, rivers and mountain ranges, or forwarding tracings and plans of these after survey. Other matters included in the correspondence relate to employment of convicts in survey parties, and the granting of tickets of leave etc.There is routine correspondence relating to requisitions for supplies and equipment, and monthly progress reports of work carried out by surveyors.An 1855 plan of small farms near Ipswich which was with letter number 55/26 of A.P. Lindo in 2/1553 has been extracted and can be found at SR Map No. 6377.N.B. References to catalogue numbers of maps and plans were frequently added to letters by draftsmen of the Survey Department enclosing plans as were reference to Sketch books where sketches enclosed by surveyors with letters were entered in the Sketch books.Letters received from the following surveyors for the dates indicated were sent to Victoria in 1855: Russell 1836-37; Hoddle 1837-51; Darke 1838; Butler 1838; Smyth 1838-44; Townsend 1839-42; Tyers 1839-44.An index and listing of major localities is available on request in the Western Sydney reading room.(2/1509-96, microfilm copy SR Reels 3051-3098; SR Map No. 6377). 101 boxes, 1 map.
