Six soil samples from four sites were examined for their pollen
content. Various loose rock structures that might have been associated with
dry land agriculture in prehistoric times were sampled. Agricultural
function at these sites is suggested through the lack of household goods,
fishing implements, or other artifacts. Pollen analysis, then, was
undertaken to identify any indication of specific crops that would support
this theory. In addition, pollen analysis addressed evidence for vegetation
prior to the introduction of historic exotics such as kiawe and haole koa,
which are prominent in the area now.
