High Resolution spectroscopy of AGN in Outburst

We propose to observe up to 3 AGN in exceptionally high states for 100 ks each with XMM, to study efficiently both their gaseous nuclear environment as well as intervening high ionization metal absorption systems. The observations will be triggered by the XTEASM and require rapid response times. This observing strategy will guarantee high quality spectra containing at least 1 million counts in the first orders of the RGS.
