Rhodobacteraceae sp. HIMB11 was isolated from surface waters of Kaneohe Bay, Oahu, Hawaii. It belongs to the ubiquitous and versatile Roseobacter clade. This organism has the genetic potential to degrade the algal compound dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) as well as oxidize carbon monoxide. Further, HIMB11 harbors the necessary machinery to use light for energy via bacteriochlorophyll-based aerobic anoxygenic photosynthesis.
