What is being measured (including unit information): Water quality: Phosphate PO4 (ppb), Nitrate NO3 (ppm), Ammonia (ppm), Phosphate PO4-P (ppb), Ammoniacal Nitrogen NH3-N (ppm), Temperature (°C). Outfall safari: Size of the outfall (according to ranking), rank the aesthetics of the outfall, rank the flow of the outfall, and identify any litter, including sewage debris. Training: In-person training using the written procedures and demonstration of all systems. Reinforced by regular group communications and a Citizen Science Hub on Mersey Rivers Trust. Methods and Equipment used: Water Quality: For water blitzes, Mersey Rivers Trust uses Hanna Checkers for Phosphate (HI-713) and Ammoniacal Nitrogen (NH3-N) (HI-715). We are trialling how we use Hanna Checkers with River Guardians, who regularly submit data. For all River Guardians water quality testing, we use LaMotte test strips, Insta-TEST Low Range Phosphate Test Strips, Insta-TEST Nitrate Test Strips, and Insta-TEST Ammonia Test Strips. Outfall safari: One of the significant threats to water quality in urban rivers is misconnected pipes, which pollute our local watercourses and compromise the biodiversity and amenity value of our waterways. This is a citizen science method for systematically inspecting, recording, and mapping the behaviour of outfalls from our local watercourses. This data builds on information gathered from previous surveys conducted by the Environment Agency and the local water company under the Water Framework Directive. Quality Assurance processes: Data gathered via EpiCollect and Cartographer were downloaded and reviewed by the program coordinator; location data were checked; input values were compared to previous readings at the same location; and unusual values were reviewed. Any necessary calculations are performed by the coordinator, not by individual scientists. Monthly report published by program coordinator on the Mersey Rivers Trust and emailed to the Newsletter email list. Timescale: Ongoing. The project started in March 2022. Data from February 2017 – present. This dataset is static at the moment, but we are working on ways to ensure it gets updated on a regular basis.
