The Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT) Porifera (sponge) collection includes more than 7800 registered specimens. The collection includes 68 holotypes and 59 paratype lots. Microscope slides (spicule and thick section preparations) are associated with most of the registered material.
The collection comprehensively covers Northern Australia, but also includes specimens from other regions in Southeast Asia (e.g. The Philippines and Thailand) and the Western Central Pacific. Many species in the collection represent new species and are undescribed.
Much of the material has been collected from remote parts of the NT coastline, during a Bioprospecting Program which alone resulted in the collection of more than 2000 sponge specimens. This recent material is linked to microscope slides, underwater photos and descriptions of the external morphology of the live sponge.
Specimens can be lent to workers at other institutions upon application and the MAGNT also welcomes visiting researchers.
