Health and Nutrition Examination Survey Obesity Study Records, 1978-1985

This dataset represents a group of paper records (a "series") within the Steven Lawrence Gortmaker papers, 1955-1998 (inclusive), 1977-1997 (bulk), which can be accessed on-site at the Center for the History of Medicine at the Francis A. Countway Library of Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts. The series consists primarily of summarized and analyzed research data generated and compiled by Steven Lawrence Gortmaker as a product of his obesity research, using raw data from the Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), previously the National Health Examination Survey (NHES). Records were generated using raw data from cycles II and III of the National Health Examination Survey and cycles I, II, and III of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The data focuses on obesity, body structure, and body measurements, analyzed by age, race, socioeconomic background, social behavior, family structure, region, survey cycle, and various other variables. Data includes regressions, frequencies, percentiles, and summary statistics, among other types of statistical analysis. Series also includes codebooks, research notes, and content descriptions of survey data tapes (tapes are not present in the collection). Data and associated records are accessible onsite at the Center for the History of Medicine per the conditions governing access described below.
