INTERIOR MONOLOGUE AND FREE INDIRECT DISCOURSE IN VIRGINIA WOOLF'S NOVELS

Virginia Woolf is widely recognized as one of the most innovative novelists of the twentieth century and one of the leading figures of literary Modernism. Her experimental narrative techniques fundamentally transformed the traditional structure of the English novel by shifting attention from external events to the representation of inner consciousness. Among the stylistic devices that define Woolf's fiction, interior monologue and free indirect discourse occupy a central position. These techniques enable the author to portray the complexity of human thought, memory, perception, and emotion while simultaneously challenging conventional forms of narration. The present article examines the functions and stylistic significance of interior monologue and free indirect discourse in Virginia Woolf's major novels, namely Mrs Dalloway, To the Lighthouse, and The Waves. Drawing upon the theories of modern narratology and stylistics proposed by scholars such as Dorrit Cohn, Gérard Genette, Ann Banfield, Geoffrey Leech, Mick Short, and Monika Fludernik, the study investigates how Woolf employs these narrative strategies to construct psychological realism and to represent the fluid nature of human consciousness. Using descriptive, comparative, stylistic, and textual analysis, this research demonstrates that Woolf does not merely adopt interior monologue and free indirect discourse as isolated literary devices. Instead, she integrates them into a unified narrative system that dissolves the boundaries between narrator and character, objective reality and subjective perception, chronological time and psychological time. The findings indicate that these techniques significantly contribute to characterization, thematic development, narrative coherence, and the artistic representation of consciousness. Furthermore, the study argues that Woolf's innovative narrative practice has exerted a profound influence on the development of modern fiction and continues to shape contemporary approaches to narrative theory and literary criticism.
