The gastrointestinal microbiota of a foal transitions early in its life as its diet changes from nursing on milk to ingesting solid food. Mare's milk was taken from 15 mares over the first fifteen days post-foaling. Microbial DNA was isolated and the V3/V4 region of the 16S ribosomal RNA gene was PCR-amplified and sequenced using MiSeq technology.
