The main survey focus of this Eurobarometer is:
1. Political attitudes and satisfaction
2. Attitudes to the EC and to European unification
3. Knowledge of a foreign language
4. Political self-classification, professional life and family
situation
Topics: 1. Political attitudes and satisfaction: citizenship and
eligibility to vote at place of residence; assessment of individual as
well as general economic situation and future development; contentment
with life; satisfaction with democracy; focus of personal interests in
the areas science, culture and in political questions; readiness for
action on political and social questions; membership in organizations,
clubs, citizen initiatives, parties and other organizations; personal
opinion leadership; frequency of political discussions and interest in
politics; postmaterialism (scale); attitude to social changes;
perceived danger of war with participation of European armies.
2. Attitudes to the EC and to European unification: interest in EC
policies; the significance of the EC for one´s own country and personal
life; attitude to unification of Western Europe and to membership of
the country in the EC; regret of a failure of the EC; judgement on the
progress of European unification; assessment of the agreement between
the EC countries; interest in information about the EC; knowledge about
the European domestic market; hopes and fears in connection with the
domestic market; preference for national or European decision-making
authority in selected political areas; preference for national or
EC-wide decisions on the rights of foreigners from non-EC countries;
preference for expansion or limitation of the rights of foreigners;
attitude to a European social charter; knowledge and judgement on the
EC Commission; judgement on the program of the EC in the cultural area;
attitude to EC policies regarding Central and Eastern Europe; attitude
to unification of the two German nations; attitude to European
financial aid for the USSR; judgement on EC crisis policies before the
background of the Gulf Crisis; knowledge and general impression of the
EC Parliament; significance of the EC Parliament for personal daily
life and for the European Community altogether; attitude to an
expansion of the powers of the European Parliament (scale); attitude to
a European Government.
3. Knowledge of a foreign language: most important problems of young
people; educational goals; frequency of visits in clubs and community
facilities in the neighborhood; native language and foreign languages
learned; ability to express oneself in a foreign language; languages
used at home; source of knowledge of a foreign language; significance
of learning a foreign language; judgement on the foreign language
offerings in schools.
4. political self-classification, professional life and family
situation: self-assessment on a left-right continuum; party allegiance;
party preference (Sunday question); behavior at the polls in the last
Federal Parliament election; party affiliation; temporary job; having
and preference for full-time or part-time employment; marriage age and
number of children; year of birth of first three children; age at start
of working life; influences of family events on occupational life;
longer employment interruptions; age, duration and type of side jobs
with longer employment interruptions; major reasons for giving up a
job; changed occupational status after a longer employment
interruption; reasons for resumption of work; changes of occupational
situation from the first children; employment of household help;
division of housework between husband and wife; problems in the search
for a babysitter; supervision person during pre-school time; preference
for personal child care or care by third party.
Demography: union membership; marital status; sex; age; size of
household; number of children in household; monthly household income;
occupational position; employment in the civil service or private
enterprise (company sector); company size; supervisor status; position
in household; occupation of head of household; self-assessment of
social class; residential status; degree of urbanization; religious
denomination; frequency of church attendance; religiousness; person
managing household; age at end of education, length of education,
occupational position, company size, supervisor status, type and place
of employment of head of household; possession of durable economic
goods; city size; region.
Additionally encoded were: date of interview; length of interview;
time of interview; city size; identification of interviewer.
Interviewer rating: presence of others during the interview;
willingness of respondent to cooperate.
Indices: opinion leadership; postmaterialism; EC support; professional
status; support for the European Parliament; political orientation;
support for the EC domestic market.
In the former GDR the following additional questions were posed:
satisfaction with the development of democracy in the GDR and the
Federal Republic up to unification; judgement on joining the EC;
vacation trip intended or already conducted to another EC country;
interest in life or work in another EC nation; judgement on EC
influence in selected political and social areas of the GDR; knowledge
of information material or advertising about the European Community.
In the old Federal Republic the following additional questions were
posed: satisfaction with democracy before and after unification of the
two German nations.
In Italy the following additional questions were posed: judgement on
the Italian EC Presidency.
In Denmark the following additional questions were posed: attitude to
an EC police in selected areas; attitude to the sales of land to
foreigners.
In France, Italy, the United Kingdom and all of Germany the following
additional questions were posed: judgement on selected political social
groups and organizations regarding representation of personal interests
of respondent; specification of the personally most important of these
groups and personal membership in one of these organizations.
