Toward a Framework for Digital Cultural Pedagogy: A Systematic Review of Local Wisdom and Cultural Identity Education

The integration of digital learning materials into local wisdom and cultural identity education has emerged as a significant focus in educational technology research, particularly in developing-country contexts where globalization threatens the transmission of indigenous and regional knowledge systems. This systematic literature review (SLR) synthesizes empirical evidence on the effectiveness, design principles, and theoretical underpinnings of digital teaching materials for local wisdom literacy and cultural identity formation among primary and secondary school students, with particular attention to Indonesian and Southeast Asian educational contexts. Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, a systematic search was conducted across five electronic databases (Scopus, Web of Science, ERIC, Google Scholar, and DOAJ) covering the period 2014–2025. Of 1,247 initially identified records, 42 studies met the inclusion criteria following full-text screening and quality assessment using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT). Synthesized evidence demonstrates that digitally enhanced, culturally grounded teaching materials consistently produce significant improvements in local wisdom literacy and measurable gains in cultural identity indicators. Four design principles emerged as critical determinants of effectiveness: (1) cultural authenticity validation, (2) multimodal content integration, (3) ADDIE-based systematic development, and (4) scaffolded cultural identity engagement. Vygotsky’s socio-cultural constructivism, Mayer’s Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning, and Bandura’s Social Cognitive Theory constitute the most commonly applied theoretical frameworks. Rigorously developed digital teaching materials represent evidence-based, scalable instruments for culturally responsive pedagogy. Beyond synthesizing empirical evidence, this review proposes a conceptual architecture for digital cultural pedagogy integrating cultural authenticity validation, multimodal learning representation, scaffolded identity engagement, and iterative instructional evaluation. The framework provides a theoretically grounded and evidence-based foundation for culturally responsive digital education, cultural sustainability, and future curriculum innovation across diverse educational settings.
