Chicken humerus from the wreck of the Earl Of Abergavenny. ID: EOA:2022.90.1 Collection: Earl of Abergavenny Classification: Remains Measurements: Length 133mm Width 35mm Date made: as yet unknown Display: not on display Manufacturer/Creator: as yet unknown Credit: Portland Museum Trust Some five hundred chickens would have been on board the Abergavenny to provide fresh eggs and food for the captain's table. They were kept in pens on the roof of the roundhouse, although a number of chicken bones recovered from the wreck were found towards the bow area. These however could be discarded debris from meals already eaten. Certainly the noise on board the "walking larder" of the deck would have been heard by the passengers in their cabins below.
