Within each species, the consensus peaks of H3K27ac and H3K4me3 overlapped to define regulatory regions enriched for H3K27ac only or both using intersectBed from bedtools v2.30.0. We defined two categories of regulatory regions: 1) promoter, which simultaneously marked by H3K4me3 and H3K27ac with at least 50% overlap of their length, and 2) enhancer, which contained H3K27ac peaks and did not overlap with H3K4me3 enriched regions.
