Inequalities expressed as upper and lower bounds on coupling strengths define the allowable parameter space for the static subcircuit.

These inequalities are obtained by algebraically manipulating the inequalities on the voltages of various populations from Table 2 that define the APS for the static subcircuit so that the inequalities are written explicitly in terms of coupling strengths. (UB = upper bound, = does not fire above threshold levels, LB = lower bound, abl = ablation, PI = pain inhibition).
