The effect of biochar on enhancing the performance of Vegetated biofiltration systems

In this study, we compared the effect of biochar on the performance of vegetated biofiltration system. Biochar has been shown to enhance the development of plants with a higher aesthetic value for landscaping compared to those without biochar. A higher removal efficiency on removing nitrogen, phosphorus, and fully alleviating the DBPs were observed in the biochars columns. The microbial community results showed more total biomass in the biochars columns compared to those without biochar. The microbial community results also exhibited the significant different between sample from biochars columns and from without biochars. Again, there were less pathogens were observed in the effluent from biochar columns compared to those without biochar columns. Findings enhance our understanding the effect of biochar on the promoting the performance of VBS, facilitating the landscaping and water sustainable reuse, in particular, in the regions of arid or half-arid areas.
