This statistic displays the number of cases that have been notified to have multidrug-resistant tuberculosis, from 2009 to 2012, by world (WHO) region. In the African region, 12,384 cases were notified as having MDR-TB in 2011. Tuberculosis is cased by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis. In 2012, 8.7 million people developed TB while 1.3 million died due to the disease. Drug-resistance is a major global health concern.
