A segmentation mask of a single boulder positioned on the surface of a spherical grid.
The capability to detect boulders on small celestial bodies' surfaces supports vision-based applications such as hazard detection during critical operations and navigation. This task is challenging due to the diverse irregular shapes, the distinct characteristics of boulder populations, and the rapid fluctuations in lighting conditions. Additionally, there is a scarcity of publicly available labeled datasets for these applications, which impedes research on data-driven algorithms.
To address these challenges, the Boulder Segmentation (Gate) Dataset has been developed. This dataset is valuable for — but not limited to — boulder recognition, centroid regression, segmentation, and navigation applications. The dataset is split into two subsets:
1. Regression Subset: Contains 4 segmented images, masks, and labels of a single boulder positioned on the spherical grid surface. It can be utilized for navigation, boulder recognition, segmentation, and centroid regression tasks.
2. Segmentation Subset: Consists of images, masks, and labels from two datasets: DS1 and DS2. DS1 is constructed using the same images as the Regression Subset, and is specifically tailored for segmentation tasks. DS2 comprises images where multiple boulder instances appear on the surface of the Didymos asteroid model.
