Microbiota alterations in patients living with HIV

Functional and structural damages of the intestinal mucosal barrier significantly contribute to the translocation of microbial products from gut into bloodstream and it’s largely involved in the HIV-1 associated chronic immune activation. This microbial translocation is largely due to a progressive exhaustion of intestinal macrophage phagocytic function, which leads to the extracellular accumulation of microbial components and results in HIV-1 disease progression.
