Whole genome sequencing of Solenopsis fugax used as a closely related outgroup to the Solenopsis fire ant clade (including S. invicta). This genome allows studying the evolution of derived traits of fire ants relative to the ancestral state. There is special interest in the social chromosome that evolved in this clade, and the sequence of S. fugax allows identification of substitutions that occurred on either the SB or the Sb branch, relative to the ancestral chromosome.
