Lexical recordings and phonological notes for the Wenling variety of Taizhou Chinese

This deposit contains primary linguistic data from the Wenling variety of Taizhou Chinese. The audio component consists of many hundreds of short WAV recordings made during lexical elicitation. The recordings principally document the local pronunciations of individual Chinese characters or words. The accompanying spreadsheet, 台州2.xls, provides the elicitation list and working index to the recordings. It contains 4,062 entries, almost all consisting of a single Chinese character. Each entry includes a headword and an explanatory prompt, usually giving compounds, example expressions, or semantic information intended to identify the particular word or reading being elicited. The spreadsheet also includes phonetic transcriptions where available, recording numbers, and working fields indicating whether an item was recorded, confirmed, or required further checking. In the present version, 608 entries are marked as recorded and 614 contain phonetic transcriptions. The transcriptions use IPA symbols together with numerical tone values. The deposit also includes 温岭方言声韵调.pdf, a three-page scan of working notes on the phonology of the dialect. Its pages are organized under the headings 韵母 ‘finals’, 声母 ‘initials’, and 声调 ‘tones’. Printed Chinese examples have been annotated by hand with phonetic transcriptions, tone values, corrections, and additional observations. These are working field materials rather than a fully normalized dictionary or completed phonological description. Some elicitation items lack recordings or transcriptions, and the spreadsheet retains internal workflow fields and occasional unresolved annotations. The collection may nevertheless be used for research on the phonology, tonal system, lexical readings, and vocabulary of the Wenling dialect, and more broadly for comparative research on the Taizhou varieties of Chinese.
