Xylose fermentation is a valuable trait for the second-generation ethanol industry. Xylose-fermenting yeasts are microorganisms still poorly exploited but with great potential to be used as a source of genes or as cell factories in fermentative processes. Overall, this group of yeasts presents low ethanol tolerance, which is one of the reasons hindering their industrial applications. An RNA-seq analysis was performed to investigate S. passalidarum transcriptional changes in response to two hours of 4% (v/v) ethanol stress aiming to shed light on the mechanisms underlying the low ethanol tolerance profile of this yeast and search for clues to improve this phenotype
