Exploring Psychological Distress Management in Oncology Outpatients

Cancer treatment places significant psychological strain on many patients, yet mental health support is inconsistent in routine care. This thesis examined how distress is identified and addressed in oncology using medical records, staff perspectives, and patient experiences. Findings showed that while distress is common, pathways to psychological support are fragmented and referrals limited. System pressures and insufficient specialist staff restrict the support available. Patients valued empathetic, individualised care, underscoring the importance of communication. These results provide real-world evidence to guide improvements in integrating mental health into oncology, ensuring care better meets patients’ psychological as well as medical needs.
