Jane Austen Female Readership From 1811 to 1878

This dataset assembles 83 documented reading events attributed to 58 women who read, discussed, or reflected on Jane Austen’s fiction during the long nineteenth century. Each entry records a discrete act of reading grounded in surviving documentary evidence, including letters, diaries, memoirs, reviews, and contemporaneous third-party testimony. The dataset distinguishes between Readers (deduplicated historical individuals) and Events (situated moments of reading), allowing users to analyze both the distribution of Austen’s female readership and the depth of individual engagement. Standardized fields record dates (where known), named Austen texts, reading context, evaluative stance, and interpretive category, alongside free-text notes that preserve the language and specificity of the source material. The dataset is intentionally transparent and conservative in its evidentiary claims. Each event is assigned an evidence level (A–D) indicating the strength and immediacy of its documentation, from detailed firsthand testimony to more attenuated or retrospective references. While the surviving archive of women’s reading is necessarily fragmentary and uneven, over seventy percent of the events fall into the two highest evidence tiers, supporting patterned analysis without overstating the claims that can be drawn from isolated anecdotes. The dataset does not aim to be exhaustive; rather, it provides a reproducible framework for aggregating women’s own accounts of what they believed Austen’s novels taught them, and for analyzing how those claims cluster into recurring forms of informal education. It is designed to be extensible, allowing future users to add new readers, events, or coding categories as additional evidence emerges.
