X-RAY ECLIPSE MAPPING OF DISC-ACCRETING WHITE DWARFS

We will apply the proven optical technique of eclipse mapping to Xrayobservations of discaccreting white dwarfs. Our previous XMMNewton studieshave demonstrated the value of this technique by allowing us to measure theextent of the shockheated plasma around the compact objects in OY Car and HTCas. In this proposal we request observations of the only other brightwellstudied eclipsing dwarf nova, Z Cha. We will measure the duration and theshape of the eclipse ingress and egress, and thus determine the extent anddistribution of the Xray emitting plasma.
