The implementation of consolidated bioprocessing (CBP) for the conversion of starch to ethanol relies ona robust yeast strain that produces enough amylases for rapid raw starch hydrolysis. Furthermore, the useof low-cost substrates, instead of corn starch, will assist with competitive ethanol prices and support abioeconomy, especially in developing countries. This paper specifically addressed both challenges. TheSaccharomyces cerevisiae ER T12, recently described as one of the most efficient CBP amylolytic strains,was further engineered for the expression of additional glucoamylase to increase ethanol productivity during raw starch fermentation.
