Trends in traditional and emerging complications of diabetes in Australia, measured by hospitalisation

The number of people with diabetes is rapidly increasing, yet the burden of complications they experience is not quantified or well described. This thesis aims to fill this research gap. We discovered that heart and blood vessel diseases are the most common complications of diabetes. Additionally, people with diabetes are hospitalised for infections more frequently, have a higher risk of injury, and spend more time in hospital beds than the general population. To tackle these issues, it is essential to enhance diabetes care with better access to heart disease prevention medications, improved vaccination programs, and fall prevention activities.
