Chronic inflammation, marked by elevated levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as Interleukin-6 (IL-6) and Tumor Necrosis Factor- α (TNF-α), is a key contributor to aging and the development of various age-related diseases. This review synthesizes studies published between 2020 and 2025, focusing on the effects of lifestyle interventions, namely dietary modifications, exercise, fasting, and stress reduction on IL-6 and TNF-α levels in older adults. Through an examination of randomized controlled trials (RCTs), meta-analyses, and intervention studies, the review explores the efficacy of these interventions in modulating inflammatory markers associated with aging. Evidence suggests Mediterranean diets and aerobic exercise can significantly reduce IL-6 and TNF-α, the effects of resistance training, mindfulness, and fasting interventions appear to be more variable. These interventions are thought to influence inflammatory pathways through mechanisms such as reduced adiposity, increased anti-inflammatory cytokine production, and modulation of oxidative stress. This review highlights the importance of individualized approaches in managing inflammation in older adults, emphasizing the need for longer, more rigorous trials to fully understand the potential of these interventions. Lifestyle modifications hold promise for mitigating chronic inflammation and promoting healthier aging, but the variability of results highlights the need for further research to optimize these interventions.
