In order to obtain soils with specific legacies, we collected soil samples from a natural area where halophytes are growing in Haixing County (Cangzhou city, Hebei province, China). We collected soil samples (0-15 cm depth) under halophytic plant patches, including three grass species, Aeluropus sinensis (AS), Imperata cylindrica (IC), Phragmites australis (PA), and three forb species, Suaeda glauca (SG), Suaeda salsa (SS), Limonium bicolor (LB). We also collected soil samples at 0-15 cm in bare saline-alkali soil, close to the patches of halophytic plant, but without vegetation and where the soil is highly saline.
