Images and GIS from an Archaeological Evaluation at Parsonage Road, Takeley, Essex 2022

This collection comprises images and GIS data from an archaeological evaluation carried out by Cotswold Archaeology on land west of Parsonage Road, Takeley Essex. The work took place in March 2022, at the request of Pegasus Group acting on behalf of Stonebond Properties (Chelmsford) Ltd. A total of 37 trenches were excavated across the site. A total of thirty-three ditches, four pits and a possible posthole were exposed within the western portion of the site, broadly matching the results of a previous geophysical survey. The majority of these features were mid to late Roman in date, ranging between the late 2nd to 4th centuries, comprising a large enclosure with further field boundaries extending to the south. The finds assemblage suggests the presence in the immediate vicinity of a small rural farmstead-type settlement, with mostly locally produced domestic coarseware pottery having been recovered as well as limited evidence of regional and imported vessels.
