Hypoxic areas and a metabolic shift toward glycolysis are common features of keloids. However, the roles and underlying molecular mechanisms of these features in keloid pathogenesis remain largely unknown. To investigate the role of proteins involved in the hypoxia–glycolysis–acidosis sequence in keloid pathogenesis, we performed gene expression profiling using the Affymetrix array platform. Among acidosis-related genes, CA9 expression was found to be overexpressed in keloid fibroblasts. Based on this finding, we further investigated the molecular function of CA9 in keloid fibroblasts.
