DJI Foreigner Survey - Young People

The demographic and socio-economic context as well as the moral
orientations of young people of Greek, Italian and Turkish origins.

Topics: 1. Education and school attendance: years in country of
origin; attending kindergarten in country of origin and in Germany;
preparation class and supplementary instruction in native language in
Germany; current attendance of an educational facility; highest degree
from a school providing all-round education as well as occupational
training conclusion in country of origin and in Germany.

2. Employment: year and month of start and region of first
occupational activity; occupational position, area of business and
average working hours at beginning of employment as well as in today´s
employment; arrangement of working hours and number of places of work
in Germany; for those not employed: status registered with employment
office as unemployed, frequency and length of unemployment.

3. Social nets: discussing personally important things with a
confidant; common meals; instinctive ties to confidant; leisure
partner; passive and active help with school tasks or homework; living
together; help with problems; sex and nationality of confidant; type of
relation with confidant; spatial distance to places of residence of
confidants; frequency of contact.

4. Affiliation and language ability: feeling of foreignness in
country of origin; viewed as German by the people in the country of
origin; ethnic group affiliation; preference for election participation
in Germany or country of origin; discrimination experiences; interest
in German citizenship; intent to return home; marriage with German
partner; national classification of first name; ethnic first names for
future children; language use with parents and siblings, in school
recess or at work; self-assessment of personal knowledge of German as
well as knowledge of language of origin.

5. Ethnic concentration: media usage and cultural participation;
foreigners in residential building; possession of books, reading of
press and renting video films in language of origin and German;
preferred language for entertainment and news broadcasts; attending
concerts of artists of country of origin; visits to youth clubs and
cafes of the ethnic group; desire for special institutions for the
ethnic group and actual availability in one´s residential area.

6. Family relationships and housing situation: division of tasks in
one´s family; influence of family members with important decisions;
help in household; sources of income; persons in residence; monthly net
household income; floor space and furnishings of residence; number of
rooms; condominium or apartment.

7. Partnership: year of meeting; start of partnership; citizenship or
origin of partner from country of origin; year of birth and month of
birth of partner; region of birth and school degree of partner; degree
of relationship with partner; participation of parents in development
of partnership; year of moving together; common residence; marriage;
common children; current continuation of partnership; end of relation;
employment, occupational position, area of business, average time
worked each week and arrangement of working hours of partner;
partnership in difficulties; thoughts, discussions and recommendations
of separation or divorce; discussions about consulting a lawyer.

8. Sex roles: desired sex of first child; expected help from an adult
daughter or an adult son; attitude to the relations between man and
woman; women in politics and in leading positions (scale).

9. Health: current condition of health; psychosomatic complaints.

10. Moral orientations: ´locus of control´; satisfaction with
situations in life (scale); subjective age status; rank order of
political goals; importance of value stands and areas of life (scale).

11. Societal and political participation and orientations: membership
and activity in clubs and (political) organizations; membership and
activity in ethnic clubs and organizations; sympathies for informal
political organizations (scale); readiness for political participation;
participation in political activities; general right to vote for
foreigners; participation in the German Federal Parliament election;
right to vote in municipal elections for foreigners; participation in a
German municipal election; attitude to democracy (scale);
self-assessment on a left-right continuum; interest in politics; anomy
scale; assessment of personal fair share of national product;
differences of one´s own political views from those of various groups;
presence of discrimination; importance of political topics; trust in
institutions.

Demography: sex, year of birth and month of birth; region of origins;
region of origins of father; region of origins of mother; number of
siblings; status regarding residence permit; marital status; number of
children; number of children desired; birth dates of one´s children;
highest school degree of father; highest school degree of mother;
employment and occupational position of parents.

Interviewer rating: language of interview; presence of third persons
during interview and their influence; linguistic communication;
