The Orphan Train Slide Collection contains one box with a script, log sheets, and 240 slides with movie stills from "The End of the Line, Orphan Trains," a documentary produced by Wendy Hearn. The film tells the story of homeless youths from Eastern United States cities who were resettled on farms in the Midwest. Charles Loring Brace, founder of the Children's Aid Society, conceived of the idea of sending abandoned children to farm families in the Midwest for foster care, as an alternative to institutionalization. Thus started the Orphan Train Movement that operated from 1854 to 1929, and relocated about 200,000 children. The slides in this collection are dated 1986-1988 and the documentary was released in 1991. Most subjects are unidentifed.
