Whole Genome Sequencing provides complete coverage of the coding and noncoding regions of the genome, which allows a more comprehensive assessment of genome. This allows to manipulate the genes and enhance, reduce or add certain features of the plant. By decoding of whole genome of the national fruit of Bangladesh, A. heterophyllus, a revolutionary genetic improvement in different important properties of jackfruit could be done. Understanding of extremely high phenotypic variabilities of jackfruit at genetic level will facilitate to develop high yielding, year-round, and flood, saline, drought and pest resistant jackfruit varieties through molecular breeding, which is badly needed for establishing jackfruit-based processing industries in Bangladesh. The specific objectives of this study include a) To sequence the whole genome of a year-roung jackfruit cv. BARI Kanthal-3; b) To reconstruct the original genome sequence of A. heterophyllus and compare with the reference genome and related species; c) To identify the location of genes and all of the coding regions in A. heterophyllus genome by annotation of genes; and d) To shed light on the genetic characters of the entire A. heterophyllus genome and unique features of a year-round jackfruit cv. BARI Kanthal-3.
