Cepaea nemoralis and Cepaea hortensis are common snails of the western European landscape. They have been studied for decades because of their exuberant shell patterning polymorphism. We are using whole genome sequencing to understand the genetics of this polymorphism, and to provide toolkits to study this textbook case of evolution in action. The work is a collaboration between The Tree of Life programme at the Wellcome Sanger Institute and Angus Davison of the University of Nottingham.
