These data describe soil carbon fractions measured for a site in Bedfordshire, England in 2011, and are described in: Upson, M.A. &amp; Burgess, P.J., 2013. Soil organic carbon and root distribution in a temperate arable agroforestry system. Plant and Soil, 373(1-2), pp.43–58. The samples were collected by Matthew Upson as part of an MSc by research at Cranfield University in 2010-2011. The field site was Olney field, Silsoe, Bedfordshire (N52°0'8.06" W0°25'46.80": http://g.co/maps/5bnxx) at the Cranfield experimental farm. Samples were taken from an agroforestry experiment described in: Burgess PJ, Incoll LD, Corry DT, Beaton A, Hart BJ (2005) Poplar (Populus spp) growth and crop yields in a silvoarable experiment at three lowland sites in England. The Impact of Silvoarable Agroforestry with Poplar on Farm Profitability and Biological Diversity Final Report to DEFRA, Silsoe: Institute of Water and Environment, Cranfield University. Eighteen samples were taken from samples taken for soil organic carbon determination at a distance of 2.5 m from tree rows (see citations) at depths of 5 cm, 30 cm, and 83 cm. Fractionation was completed by Andy Gregory in the labs at Rothamsted Research under contract from Crabfield University using the Zimmermann method: Zimmermann, M. et al., 2007. Measured soil organic matter fractions can be related to pools in the RothC model. European Journal of Soil Science, 58(3), pp.658–667. The data comprise 8 columns and 90 rows: <strong>sample: </strong>Number of the original sample [integer: 1:18] <strong>block: </strong>Following the original experimental design, there are three replicate blocks [integer: 1:3] <strong>ctrltmt: </strong>This column describes whether the sample was taken from the silvoarable agroforestry experiment (tmt), or from surrounding arable controls (ctrl) [character: ctrl, tmt] <strong>distance: </strong>Distance of sample from sample tree. In the original experiment from which these samples were taken, several distances were sampled. For fractionation, a single distance was selected (2.5 m). Samples from the conventional arable control are allocated C. [character: 2.5 or C] <strong>depth:</strong> Depth from which the sample was taken in centimetres. [integer: 5, 30, 83] <strong>value: </strong>Carbon percentage recovered from each fraction. Note one erroneous negative value. [float] <strong>fraction:</strong> Zimmermann fraction.
