Photograph (engineering notebook photoprint) looking north from point opposite Hermosa Biltmore (formerly Surf and Sand Club), Hermosa Beach, Los Angeles County. Heavy rain. Note heavy erosion of beach. Sand cut down 6 feet or more. Dead seal washed ashore in rain. This was the result of a 6.2 tide on 9 January 1940 accompanied by heavy ground swells and 30 foot breakers which did considerable damage to piers and ocean front property between Newport Beach and Malibu. Also visible are: a few houses, ocean.
