On 29 March 1772, Gros Ventre commanded by Louis de Saint Aloüran anchored off Dirk Hartog Island. The next day, the party claimed possession of the land. As part of the annexation ceremony, a document was put in a bottle and buried at the foot of a small tree. In 1998, after a French coin and lead seal were found, the Museum searched for the annexation document. They found this.
