This paper-based collection of records from Cuming Smith and Company Limited includes: minutes 1897-1947; director's attendance books; share issues; public relations material; business correspondence and memoranda 1875-1960; legal documents 1871-1956; reports and submissions 1903-1965; catalogues 1882-1974; accounts and stock records; ledgers; balance sheets; medals 1877-1925; amalgamation and kindred matters; maps and plans 1860-1959; personnel material; technical reports; publications; newspaper clippings; Victorian Fertilizer Association minutes 1907-1929; Cuming family papers including private diaries, correspondence and notebooks 1829-1944.
Cuming Smith and Company was established in 1872 to manufacture acids, and later superphosphate. The company joined with others in 1929 to form Commonwealth Fertilizers, acquired by Imperial Chemical Industries of Australia and New Zealand Limited (ICIANZ) in 1961. Cuming Smith also had an interest in interstate fertilizer manufacturers, and in sawmilling and wood distillation near Melbourne.
