The dataset for 10 randomly selected adult Staghorn Sumac followed by the nearest sapling in the Saywell Woodlot at York University

A dataset of 10 randomly selected adult Staghorn Sumac collected at the edge of the Saywell Woodlot located on York University Keele Campus (Monday September 21st, at approximately 4:00 pm). Weather conditions during that time were slightly cloudy and around 19 degrees celsius. The following measurements were recorded: (i) the dbh of the adult Staghorn Sumac, (ii) an estimation of the canopy coverage, (iii) distance to the nearest sapling, and (iv) sapling dbh. All measurements were recorded using a transect measuring tape. The experimenter would begin by selecting an adult tree, which was identfied based on the height of the tree (over 6 feet). Dbh was then recorded at chest level of the experimenter. Canopy coverage was recorded by having the experimenter make a square with their fingers and estimating how much sky can be seen. Once all measurements of the adult tree was recorded, the experimenter would then proceed to the nearest sapling. Trees with a smaller height than the same experimenter were considered as saplings. Measurements were taking from the center of the adult trunk to the center of the sapling trunk. Dbh was then recorded at the center of the trunk. The steps were repeated until 10 adult trees had been selected. All measurements were taken from the same experimenter to ensure consistency. Estimations were based on the experimenter's own judgement.
