The simulation results used the PPMLR-MHD code, in which an extended Lagrangian version of the piecewise parabolic method is applied to solve the ideal MHD equations, to obtain the global simulation results for the solar wind-magnetosphere-ionosphere system. In the GSM coordinate system, the solution domain is −100 Re < x < 30 Re (Re is the Earth’s radius) and −100 Re < y, z < 100 Re. Inside −10 Re < x, y, z < 10 Re, the grid size is 0.1 Re, while outside this region the grid size increases in geometric progression along each axis. An inner boundary of the magnetosphere is set at 3 Re to avoid the complex calculation associated with the plasmasphere and strong magnetic field. Within the inner boundary, a simplified ionosphere and the magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling effects are also taken into consideration.
