Brustbild von d. Seite. Zwischen Bamum und Bali liegt noch mancher Negerstamm: Der Stamm der Babessi, Babungo, Bamessing u. Bafueng. In Babungo hat die Basler Mission erst kürzlich ein schönes Werk begonnen und am alten Häuptling bis jetzt einen starken Hinterhalt. Recht unkultiviert sieht zwar der heidnische König aus, der noch beinahe unbekleidet geht und wenig von der neuen Zeit an sich herankommen lässt. Aber er sieht es gern, wenn die Jugend die neuen Wege geht. 3 seiner Söhne sind getauft und amtieren als Hilflslehrer der Mission in ihrer Vaterstadt. Der König lässt sich von ihnen gerne beraten und freut sich, wenn sie im leben vorwärts kommen. - In Babungo ist viel Eisenerz zu finden und der Häuptling hat sehr intelligente Hochöfen konstruiert, um die er von manchem Stammesoberhaupt benieden wird." Between Bamum and Bali there are many other African tribes: the tribes of Babessi, Babungo, Bamessing and Bafueng. The Basel Mission started a very fine work in Babungo just recently, and up to now the old chief has given strong support. The non-chistian king looks, perhaps, uncultivated. He wears almost no clothes and doesn't let much of the new world get close to him. But he is pleased if the young people go the new ways. Three of his sons are baptsied and are working for the Mission in their ancestral town as assistant teachers. The King allows himself to be advised by them and is happy if they make progress in life. - There is a lot of iron ore in Babungo and the chief has shown great intelligence in constructing smelting furnaces.
