School and tertiary education building, 'SB' and 'S' files, are records which deal with the planning, construction and maintenance of educational institutions and facilities such as schools, fitness centres, colleges and community welfare centres.The files comprise of documents, plans and reports relating to the standards to be incorporated in the manual of school planning, the acquisition of sites, construction, the re-development of buildings, , maintenance, repair, stormwater drainage, heating, security, fire protection, lighting systems and other building and construction services.The series includes records for concrete dome structures known as Binishells which were used as multi-purpose centres or libraries at selected schools.School building files were originally part of the Building files until a separate registry, 'SB' files, was established in 1937.Until 1954, the files were registered by year with consecutive numbering. From 1954 a new numbering system was applied where a building or site was given a specific base number with consecutive numbers for related files.The records were given an prefix until 1966 when the system changed to an 'S'.ReferenceThe Concise Guide to the State Archives of New South Wales (3rd Edition).
