Penzance Market Cross - Enhanced inscriptions

Penzance Market Cross could date from the 11th century. It has been moved many times, and has suffered much damage along the way. In this 3D scan, the texture of the stone has been removed and enhanced, revealing the detail of the decorations, inscriptions and damage.

There has been much discussion in the past over the meaning of the inscriptions and decorations, notably from R. A. S. Macalister and Prof Charles Thomas. The cross now lays permanently outside Penlee House Gallery and Museum in Penzance.

There are hints of letters and decorations yet to be recorded, and there is much to be done on understanding this enigmatic stone.
