Digital Archive from an Archaeological Evaluation at Colchester Road, Tiptree, Essex, September 2022

This collection comprises images, survey drawings, site records, and project brief from an archaeological evaluation at Colchester Road, Tiptree, Essex. This work was undertaken by Colchester Archaeological Trust in September 2022, in advance of the construction of 200 new homes. Fifty-nine trial-trenches were machine-excavated under the supervision of a CAT archaeologist. All trenches were 30m long and 1.8m wide. This evaluation uncovered 25 features: 16 pits, eight ditches or gullies and a gully/plough scar. Of particular interest are a pit that has a possible Mesolithic or Early Neolithic date, on the western side of the excavation area, and a cluster of medieval features in the north. A small quantity of features dating to the prehistoric, Roman and post-medieval/modern periods were also spread across the site.
